What is a Sitemap?

A sitemap can mean two different things:

1. A sitemap made for users is an index page of pages on a website.

2. A sitemap made for search engines is an XML file. Sitemaps make search engine indexing more efficient by helping search engine robots easily find all the pages on your site.

A sitemap for users is basically an index page on a website that lists all the pages on the site in a hierarchical order. In some cases, this can make it easier for the user to find the information they are looking for. In general, however, the interface is poorly designed if the user needs to search for information using such a directory. You don't see very many of these today. In general, when talking about a sitemap, we are talking about an XML file made for search engines, which also lists all the pages on the site.

For Google and other search engines, it is helpful if your e-commerce software or publishing system has the functionality to produce an XML Sitemap. A sitemap is an XML file that lists each page on a site in a specific format. Search engines occasionally visit your Sitemap to find new pages added to your site more quickly. This way, for example, new ecommerce products and new blog articles end up in the Google search index faster. If your system supports Sitemap creation, you may want to enable it. The URL of a sitemap file can be reported to Google using the Google Search Console.

What is HTML Sitemap?
